Driving Your Rig Through Road Construction
Driving a rig is serious work. Keeping safe on the roadways requires training, experience, and patience. And as though driving a truck isn't hard enough, every so often a driver is forced to make their way through road construction. While driving through construction is unavoidable, it is not impossible; here are our tips to drive through road construction safely.
While driving, watch for the signs of upcoming construction, both in the patterns of traffic around you, and the actual signs erected by construction crews. By being aware of what's happening around you, you'll increase your chances of getting through unscathed.
Speaking of traffic patterns, be sure to merge safely and early. As soon as you can get into the open lane safely, and be sure to watch your blind spots for vehicles who may try to speed up to get past you.
Highway driving allows you to cruise along at safe, yet higher speeds. When you're approaching construction zones, you'll notice that those speed limits will decrease; do so immediately to keep yourself and the construction crew safe.
By paying attention to what's directly ahead of you, and what's coming up along the line, you'll be able to recognize changes in traffic patterns and speed, which will help you to keep a proper distance between you and the vehicles in front of you.
Construction sites are busy places with a lot of activity. Be sure to keep your eyes open for crew members; they may need you to stop to allow for workers, or equipment, to enter your lane of traffic. By keeping your distance and obeying speed limits, you can help keep everyone safe.
